US Air Force Adopts Women Empowered

Feburary 15, 2013

After Reporting a 30% Increase in USAF Sexual Assaults

Last month, an article was published revealing the findings of a US Air Force internal investigation which revealed a 30% increase of reported incidences of sexual assault in 2012. Even more disturbing than the number of sexual assaults is the fact that most of these crimes are committed by fellow airmen.

Gen. Mark Welsh, the Air Force chief of staff, said there were 796 reports of cases ranging from inappropriate touching to rape. The number could be much greater, Welsh said, because many cases are never reported at all.

"Calling these numbers unacceptable does not do the victims justice," Welsh said. "The truth is, these numbers are appalling!"

100 Women To Be Certified at Minot Air Force Base
As part of an ongoing effort to curb misconduct, the US Air Force has partnered with the Gracie Academy to certify 100 men and women of the US Air Force to teach the Gracie Women Empowered program. The training is set to take place in April at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. Upon graduating from a one-week intensive program, course participants will be authorized to teach the core principles and techniques to other women throughout the Air Force.
