Never heard the word Gracie before...

July 14, 2011

The following letter was submitted by a student at the Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Center in Cape Town, South Africa.

Ill tell you my BJJ story quick, it`s amazing how Jiu Jitsu has become part of my life. I think you might like to hear it.

I initially joined up not knowing anything about grappling, not really having an interest in it, and for very different reasons than I am doing it now.

Most guys watched MMA and saw BJJ kicks serious a$$ and joined for that reason. I had no knowledge of BJJ, MMA or UFC for that matter.

I was purely looking for something new to do, wanted to meet some new people, do something I can defend myself with and to get some more flexibility. Those were my reasons and i think I actually listed them like that the first time I mailed you for the intro class. I was considering Mui Thai, boxing, kickboxing or kung fu(you can laugh now), anything martial art wise, except Karate, would have been fine in my mind.

Then one night I was ordering take aways at the Asian Wok and picked up your flyer. Never heard the word "Gracie" before. And no clue what Jiu jitsu was. I googled a bit and learned a bit more about what its about. I`ll be honest with you, I had a pre conceived idea that any form of grappling was lame and its just guys holding on to each other when they should/could be hitting each other.

And in the end I actually decided to do the intro class and join for that very reason. I wanted to see for myself it was as lame as I thought it was. My interest was definitely sparked after the intro class. I had to find out for myself.

HAHAHA.. almost a year down the line and it has consumed me. It has infiltrated all aspects of my life and training. I think about it all the time, dream about it, talk about it.

My weight training has gone from wanting to be aesthetically bigger for no real reason to wanting to be better, stronger and last longer on the mat. At gym I train with much more focus and motivation having this goal of improving my JJ.

My reasons for dieting has changed and I have lost 15kg and over 10% bodyfat so that I can be more mobile and effective in my body and on the mat, as opposed to just wanting to look better.

Like I said I fight through my day at work knowing my GI is in my scooter for tonight's class. I leave work drained and with a little bit less life in me. Arrive at class still in that headspace and by the time I leave its like I never even worked that day.

Those are just a few examples. It really has become an essential part of my life and something I look forward to. And something I miss very much when I can't come for whatever reason.

I think about it now and it must be fate, it was such a small difference between doing GJJ and anything else. I am just too glad I ended up at GJJ.

I owe a HUGE thank you to you guys and Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Its a great academy with a really good vibe and you guys are great teachers. So thank you very much!

Thought I`d share that with you seeing as you are one of the few people who will truely understand and appreciate what I mean.

Thanks again for the help and understanding. I really appreciate it.

See you tomorow for both classes :).

Gracie Jiu Jitsu for life!!!
