Gracie Breakdown: Rickson vs. Masakatsu Funaki

August 3, 2012

Now available on Gracie University

In this week's Bonus Breakdown, Ryron and Rener analyze what would be the last fight of Rickson's career. His opponent, Masakatsu Funaki, is the only person to have wins over Bas Ruten and both Shamrock brothers, Frank and Ken, and was was widely considered to be one of the best Japanese fighters in mixed martial arts history. The fight starts with Rickson throwing a quick "pisao" front kick with a simultaneous jab to distract Funaki and achieve the clinch. After a failed foot-sweep, Rickson ends up on the bottom of the guard, until he uses a beautifully timed base get-up to get back to his feet. With the clinch re-established, Rickson uses a few knees to the face to setup a quick snap-down which puts him on top of the side mount. From there he transitions to mount and applies his trademark Twisting Arm Control with a beautiful modification to get the back. He applies the Rear Naked Choke and Funaki goes to sleep with his eyes open. Not familiar with the concept of "occular fixation" the referee lets the fight continue until Rickson releases the choke on his own reconnaissance to avoid killing Funaki.
