Featured CTC: Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Mukilteo

August 2, 2016

Great Neighborhood Article by Carla Swedish

Andre Lannertone, resident of Harbour Pointe and the owner/instructor at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu of Mukilteo ( also discovered a natural talent and a true passion for martial arts at a very young age. He has studied boxing, judo, karate, Aikido, WingChunDo and Kickboxing; he also earned Master status, Fifth Degree, for the art of Kenpo. He was the AAU National (Japanese) Jujitsu champion in 1991. Even after achieving championship status with Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, Andre noticed that "buddies" who were using the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu techniques were winning competitions against him despite far less experience and years of training. Andre went on to study and receive a certified blue belt in this highly regulated lineage of Jiu-Jitsu, followed by certification in Level 1 Gracie Survival Tactics and, in July of 2014, Instructor Certification with Gracie Academy.

Andre says that what makes Gracie Jiu-Jitsu "wildly different" and highly effective is its emphasis on leverage and technique over strength and speed. Andre also appreciates and dedicates his school 100% to the principal of martial arts for self-defense. There is no competitive aspect to classes at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Mukilteo. The atmosphere is supportive and empowering; the classes for all ages are geared toward having fun while one learns; and the aim is to teach self-confidence so that one is never a victim. He uses role playing and active in-class technical practice to help students achieve a high level of proficiency.

Most of the students enrolled at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu are children and men, grouped not just by age but by level of experience. Andre also offers private instruction; which is how he currently reaches women. Ironically, most of the class that took place on June 18 was adult women! (Below are a couple of testimonials.) Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Mukilteo is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and offers discounts to those who would not otherwise be able to afford classes.

One of the most vibrant programs of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is "Gracie Bullyproof" for kids of all ages. The motto here is "[w]e prepare your child to deal with bullies without turning them into one." An admirable perspective in today's world, and one which Andre, a Dad himself, embraces whole-heartedly.

"I thought it was really good. I think it's good to know self-defense in the world we live in. I think it's a good thing to have in the community and it's a lot of fun." Mike Nielson "It was very informative and a lot of fun. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed it." -Sherri Grosso

"It was really empowering and I'm looking forward to bringing my girls back here to learn about it too." -Trang Nguyen
