Isaac and Kayla begin the Jiu-Jitsu Journey in North Carolina

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Jonesville is located in North Carolina and is run by Brandon Vaughn. Brandon has over 22 years of martial arts experience and he offers Gracie Combatives and Master Cycle classes. In the interview below, you get to meet Isaac and Kayla, a married couple who recently began their jiu-jitsu journey together. There is no love like which is based on chokes and armlocks!

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Jonesville: How did you hear about our school?

Kayla: I was looking for any type of women's self defense class so I started searching the internet. It took no time before I came across a Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Center in Jonesville and saw it was only 5 minutes from my house.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Jonesville: Tell us about the Women's self defense class you attended?

Kayla: I was a bit nervous going in because I have had no martial arts experience prior to Women's self defense. That feeling quickly faded, and I had a great time. Everyone in the class was extremely welcoming, friendly, and helpful. What made it even better was going home and being able to flip and submit my 200 pound husband with the techniques I had learned (I'm 5'3, 95 lbs.).

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Jonesville: After you attended the Women's self defense class you made an appointment to try a free Gracie Combatives class. What was the deciding factor between trying that class versus one of the karate classes?

Kayla: I was drawn more so toward the Gracie class because it is geared toward being able to defend yourself against a larger opponent. Gracie Combatives seemed more practical as far as being able to defend myself in a "real life" scenario.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Jonesville: Isaac, Kayla already mentioned that she had no previous martial arts experience before joining class. What about you?

Isaac: None.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Jonesville: What prompted you to attend that first Gracie Combatives class with Kayla?

Isaac: When Kayla came home she was so excited to show me the techniques she had learned from the Women's self defense class. After being choked out, flipped over, and put in an arm bar, my reaction was "This is awesome, I had no idea they taught stuff like this around here." Kayla told me they also offer a Jiu-jitsu class, and I was pumped. We were looking for an activity to share together so that was that. We both took the 10-day trial and signed up.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Jonesville: Can you each share some of your thoughts on your first class?

Isaac: In the first 10 min of class I learned the Trap and Roll. I started on the bottom with Brandon, our instructor, on top in the full mount. I was told to try to roll you over, and after about a minute, all I had seemed to do was tire myself out. Then we switched places and I was told to do my best to stay on top. I was rolled over without any effort. It was humbling, but I was extremely excited that I was going to soon learn how to do the techniques.

Kayla: It was funny to see my husband so helpless! At first I didn't know how I would feel with the close contact, but after the 10 min intro that feeling vanished. Getting over that quickly allowed me to be able to concentrate on learning the actual technique instead of waiting nervously, wondering about how rolling around with a partner was going to be.

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Jonesville: Now that you've been taking classes for several weeks, give us an update on your experience so far.

Isaac & Kayla: We have both thoroughly enjoyed coming to class. We find it to be therapeutic and healthy for our minds as well as our bodies. Learning the techniques takes complete concentration, so for an hour during class all we have to focus on is our jiu-jitsu. When we first see a technique we both kind of smile and are like "Yes, we're about to learn how to do that," It's exciting! Some of the techniques are obviously more intricate than others, but all techniques are broken down step-by-step and explained in detail very well. When we break off to try them on each other, Brandon, as well as other classmates are very encouraging and helpful when we forget what we're doing. It is a very positive and welcoming atmosphere, which is what really "makes" the experience. You can count on us being at all 3 classes each week. As long as we can find a babysitter!
