A Loss in the Jiu-Jitsu Family

April 1, 2015

Dave Lukoff Leaves Behind a Great Story on How Jiu-Jitsu Changes Us

One of our Certified Training Centers, Gracie Jiu-Jitu Sudbury, recently lost one of it's members.
Dave Lukoff was a 47-year-old Gracie Jiu-Jitsu blue belt who passed away in his sleep on March 18, 2015.

Dave was very proud of recently passing his Gracie Combatives Blue Belt test and listed achieving his rank in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as one of the proudest achievements of his life.
Dave leaves behind 3 children; 2 boys (11 and 7yrs) and 1 girl (9yrs).

Dave was so proud of his jiu-jitsu accomplishments that his family decided to dress him in his gi at the funeral service. In solidarity with their good friend and training partner, his instructor, Steve Joncas, and many fellow students also dressed in their gis for the funeral.

Dave started jiu-jitsu in 2011, got hooked, and soon became one of the most dedicated and consistent students at the academy! Dave was an engineer who often worked 12-hour graveyard shifts only to head straight to jiu-jitsu class on no sleep! Dave suffered from severe anxiety, among other ailments, and believed that jiu-jitsu was his best form of therapy.

Dave always put his kids first and loved them immensely! Dave wouldn't miss a chance to help out around the academy, whether it was helping new students feel more comfortable or helping out with renovations. He was always there for his jiu-jitsu brothers and sisters. He will be greatly missed by all at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Sudbury and everyone who rolled with 'Big Dave.'
