NavyTimes.com recently published an article about military children and their increased susceptibility to the pressures of bullying. One of the solutions that a California family found for their son was the Gracie Jiu-Jitusu Academy, where his confidence was bolstered giving him the give him the ability to walk tall down the school hallways.
With a stepfather deployed to Iraq to face foreign enemies, high-schooler Dustin Floyd found himself facing domestic enemies when bullies started harassing him on a daily basis. His grades started to drop and his stepfather, Border Patrol agent and California Army National Guard infantryman Sgt. Ed Gilest, wasn't sure where to turn, so he suggested that his wife take Dustin to the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy.
"The transformation was amazing," Gilest says. "Within a month, his mom was telling me about how he was walking taller and that he was taking things head-on."
According to the article, the benefits of the classes at Gracie Academy have also enriched Dustin's life in other ways. "It's more than just better confidence," he says. "I have learned to respect others treat them the way I want to be treated. And now I respect myself more because of that."
